Clergy, Professionals Discuss Compassionate Care

Nearly 200 of Miami’s top clergy members, social workers, home caregivers and mental health professionals spent the day June 11 at the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital at Douglas Gardens to talk about “Compassion Fatigue” — the balancing act that some Baby Boomers struggle with as they care for their aging parents, their own children and work full-time. More than 100 members of Miami’s Jewish community traveled to Israel to celebrate Israel’s 60th birthday. The Israel 60 Mission included volunteering in Yerucham and Pardes Channa-Karkur, Federation partnership cities.


William Lehman, Jr. was elected recently as the Federation’s new Chair of the Board. The elections were conducted at the Annual Meeting of the Federation. Barbara Black Goldfarb was named Federation’s new General Campaign Chair.


The Greater Miami Jewish Federation has joined a national effort to provide immediate, nonsectarian aid to the victims of recent natural disasters in the central U.S. All funds will be distributed through United Jewish Communities.


For more than 25 years, the President and General Campaign Chair of Federation have hosted a year-end thank you luncheon for the staff, including presentation of staff awards. Recipients on June 12 were: Sandra Bishop and Marc Fishman.


Responding to the security concerns of local Jewish institutions, the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Anti-Defamation League held their annual Security Awareness Conference. More than 21 local Jewish organizations and agencies participated.


Seventy Rabbis from South Florida and across denominations came together on May 19th to learn and support their respective UJA/Federation Campaigns at a Yom Iyun, a Day of Learning, with guest speaker and scholar Rabbi Avi Weiss.


Since last summer, Sderot and the surrounding communities have been under the shadow of relentless Kassam rocket attacks. And UJC, the umbrella organization for Jewish federations in North America, has invested more than $21 million in humanitarian aid.
