About the Greater Miami Jewish Federation

Since 1938, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation has been a unifying force for Jewish community-building and philanthropy. We work to enrich the quality of Jewish life in Miami-Dade County by bringing comfort and hope to the vulnerable and by investing in programs that build Jewish knowledge, identity and peoplehood — ensuring the next generation of Jews.

The Annual Federation/UJA Campaign raises tens of millions of dollars each year to fund agencies locally — including Jewish day schools, synagogue religious schools and Jewish community centers, as well as numerous social-service programs to care for those in need in Miami.

Federation-funded agencies also work to advocate on important social issues and provide a strong foundation for Jewish life and identity-building on college campuses and in communities across the United States.

In Israel, Federation is changing lives by helping to settle immigrants, assisting in times of crisis and engaging in special partnerships with Yerucham and Or Akiva and the Ethiopian-Israeli community in Pardes Channah-Karkur.

Federation also supports programs in more than 70 other countries, aiming to combat antisemitism, provide a lifeline of vital services to the frail and vulnerable, rebuild Jewish communities and help rescue and resettle those in peril. The vital work of these programs and agencies is coordinated by our long-time overseas partners — The Jewish Agency for Israel, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), World ORT and other non-governmental organizations.

In cooperation with the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) and working in partnership with a network of local, national and international beneficiary agencies and programs, we touch countless lives each year.

Our Mission

The Mission of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation is to mobilize human and financial resources to care for those in need, strengthen Jewish life and advance the unity, values and shared purpose of the Jewish people in Miami, in Israel and around the world.

Our History

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation was founded in 1938 in response to Kristallnacht (considered by many to be the harbinger of the Holocaust). Since then, Miami has grown from just a resort destination into a unique, culturally diverse community. As the Jewish population has grown, Federation has evolved right along with it. We've helped plan schools, Jewish community centers, agencies and synagogues. We've welcomed Jews from Cuba, Latin America, France, the former Soviet Union and other places. We've stood alongside Israel in ordinary and extraordinary times. And we've raised our voices on behalf of the voiceless – from Refusenik Jews to frail aging Holocaust survivors right here at home.

Our Governance

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation is a qualified tax-exempt nonprofit corporation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Federation’s Tax Identification Number is 59-0624404.

A Board of Directors governs Federation. Elected each year at our Annual Meeting, these volunteers include many of our most active supporters, as well as leaders of our partner agencies.

Board members also serve with other local volunteers on strategic committees that oversee Federation operations, as well as the direction of our departments and philanthropic programs.
